Abstract

Media is the reflection of society and its real aim is to present the true image of society. TV channels are an important part of mass media. TV talk shows and the content that is broadcasted on TV channels are supposed to present social issues. Hence these channels, in addition to foreign affairs, should also talk about public issues. This would help in solving these issues by drawing attention of the authorities, including the government departments. That could only be achieved when the real issues of the nation are highlighted and debated. This study examines to which extent talk shows on TV channels are covering the real problems faced by masses. This is an important subject for research as a large number of people watch TV shows, much larger than those who read columns and news articles published by newspapers. In this research we selected eight talk shows of the leading Pakistani TV channels broadcast from August to October in 2015 and compared the topics which were discussed in talk shows with the important issues faced by the public. It was found that issues of public interest could not find space in TV talk shows. Most talk shows discussed national politics or the country’s security. They preferred the media agenda, ignoring the public agenda.
