A Contemporary Version of TV in Pakistan: Analysis of Netflix

This paper examines the content available on Netflix in Pakistan as youngsters are interested in watching Netflix instead of watching traditional television now. This research also highlights the need of a proper policy with reference to monitoring the content available on Netflix in Pakistan. In Pakistan, censorship laws are present and implemented in case of films, television programs, print media and the internet. Although, Netflix is available through internet for the users but no censorship policies have been observed to monitor the content in Pakistan. In this research, survey method has used as a primary tool to know trends among youth of watching Netflix.Based on their likings and watching preferences, opening seasons of top five Netflix series were selected for content analysis. Survey reveals that those who are in their late teens and early twenties are most likely to watch Netflix. While content analysis demonstrates that series mostly watched by teenagers or youngsters in Pakistan are based on explicit content. Finding of the study recommends that government of Pakistan along with the collaboration of media educationists and policies makers must introduce censorship policies and laws to control Netflix content and make sure their implementation.
